The Al Hawizeh Marshes are the only Ramsar Site in Iraq, but the marshes have increasingly dried out. This region is the scene of new oil and gas development. Under our collaborative partnership, we are assisting Shell to make sure that these developments have minimal negative impact on the biodiversity of the marshes and the ecosystem services they provide. Working with Shell, contractor Mott MacDonald and local partner Nature Iraq, this is seen as an opportunity to contribute to the restoration of the marshes.

The nature in the Arctic region is fragile, recovery is slow. The impact of just a new road in the permafrost marshes may impact a much wider area, for decades. Wetlands International aims to minimise the impacts of the oil and gas sector on the onshore and coastal Arctic wetlands by working with Shell on guidelines.

Ayer Hitam Peat Swamp Forest is the last remaining peatswamp forest in the state of Johor, Malaysia. Wetlands Inernational is working together with the State Government to protect and conserve the area.

The Critical Site Network (CSN) Tool is an award winning online resource that provides information on 294 waterbird species and the important wetlands upon which they depend in Africa and Western Eurasia. This tool provides users with direct access to both International Waterbird Census and Important Bird Area counts, as well as a range of analytical and explorative tools.

Wetlands International was present at the Convention on Biological Diversity in Japan. Via presentations, publications and advocacy, we pushed for an ambitious strategic plan, in which countries committed themselves to actions for the coming decade. Although our ambitions on some issues were higher than the outcomes, we are content with the consensus reached between all countries (see www.cbd.int/nagoya/outcomes).

El Charlatán (Dolichonyx oryzivorus) es el único ictérido migrador neártico que llega a la Argentina, cubriendo una distancia de 20.000 km de ida y vuelta entre América del Norte y nuestro país. El conocimiento sobre la ecología no reproductiva del Charlatán en América del Sur fue muy pobre hasta los inicios del presente milenio, cuando se realizaron algunos trabajos de revisión que aportaron información inédita y actualizada sobre la especie.

Durante el mes de octubre de 2008 se llevó a cabo en la ciudad de Calí, Colombia el taller para la “Conservación de Aves Playeras Migratorias en Arroceras del Norte de América del Sur”, organizado por Wetlands International y la Asociación Calidris, con el apoyo de la Red Hemisférica de Reservas de Aves Playeras (RHRAP) y la National Fish & Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) y, con el auspicio de la Corporación Autónoma Regional del Valle del Cauca (CVC).

This project focuses on Wular Lake, one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia. Rapid degradation of Wular Lake has an enormous impact on community health and livelihoods. This prompted the state government to contract Wetlands International South Asia and her partners to develop an integrated management plan for restoration of the lake and its catchment.

WISA (Wetlands International South Asia) and UNICEF-India worked on a two month desk study to review and map available information in relationship to water bird concentrations and poultry productions, with an objective of prioritizing regions for Avian Influenza awareness raising activities under current programes of UNICEF and Ministry of Agriculture.

The Follow the Bird! project demonstrates the vital importance of a network of good quality wetlands along migratory bird flyways and the link of these wetlands to the livelihoods of people.
The ambassadors of the project are birds equipped with satellite-transmitters. Currently the migration of ten Purple Herons can be followed on the Internet at Follow the Bird!
